How to help prevent dog theft

Over the past few weeks there have been various reports in the news of an increase in the number of dogs being stolen for monetary gain.  The below hints and tips, along with vigilance, will help to keep your dog safe and at home with you where they belong!

  • Tags - always ensure your dog is wearing a correctly fitting collar and tag at all times. The tag should say your surname and address as well as the best contact number for you. Do not put your dogs name on the tag - this way the thief's will not know their name to call them! Not only is this great for keeping your dog safe, it's also the law.
  • Microchip your dog - microchips are small capsules, around the size of a grain of rice, which are inserted into the dog just under the scruff of the neck.  The microchip contains all the contact details that will be needed to get your dog back to you.
  • Make sure your dog is always supervised in the garden and that your garden is fully enclosed so no one can get in and your dog can't sneak out. Always check that your garden is secure after strong winds as fence panels may have moved.
  • Keep all documentation relating to your dog in a safe place along with clear photos of your dog highlighting any distinct markings.
  • It is advisable to discuss who owns the dog in the event that your relationship should break down. It is advisable to document who will own the dog after a bereavement or break-up.
  • if you require a dog-sitter or dog-walker to help with your dog ensure you check their creditability through references, criminal records check, and insurance.
  • Be aware of people on walks asking a lot about your dog, this is more difficult when you have a puppy as people want to know a lot about them. But, remain alert, and always down play your dog! Tell the interested party that they are neutered (unless it's particularly obvious!) or that they have dodgy hips, they are old etc.
  • NEVER tie your dog up outside a shop.
  • NEVER leave your dog unattended in your car
Just by being aware that people steal dogs for money or for gambling purposes will help to keep your dog safer.
